Tom Lauwers

Founder & Chief Roboticist
Bird Brain Technologies

Prior to founding BirdBrain Technologies, Tom was a Ph.D student in the CREATE lab at Carnegie Mellon University and was principal hardware engineer on the research projects that led to the Hummingbird Robotics Kit and to the Finch robot. His core competence is developing educational “gadgetry” to help students to create compelling, personal artifacts. In the process, students often "accidentally" learn engineering, computer science, math, and how to work together. Tom has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, and an M.S. and Ph.D in Robotics, all from Carnegie Mellon University. He lives in Pittsburgh with his wife, two kids, and small army of robots.
